Bonjour à tous ! J’espère que vous avez bien commencé l’automne… Voici un petit sujet pour la rentrée :
En anglais, tout comme en français d’ailleurs, un mot peut avoir plusieurs significations. Par exemple, mean peut être un adjectif = méchant, radin, moyen ou maigre, mais aussi un verbe: to mean = signifier, vouloir dire, comme dans: What do you mean? De nombreux mots ont plusieurs significations, tout particulièrement les verbes à particules comme: to put on… et c’est surtout lorsqu’on doit comprendre ce qu’on nous dit qu’il est important de connaître la signification du mot en question dans son contexte, sinon on risque de se trouver mal pris.
Voici quelques exemples de ces mots à multiples significations, des mots qui sont indispensables pour comprendre et parler anglais facilement.
MEAN
What does it mean? (Que cela signifie-t-il/qu’est-ce que cela veut dire ?). He keeps everything for himself, he is very mean (radin, avare). He was mean to his sister (méchant). The mean score is 8 (moyen). A rather mean portion of meat (maigre).
HEAVY
A heavy box (lourd = sens propre). The traffic is heavy (dense). Heavy responsibilities (lourd = sens figuré). Heavy rain (de fortes pluies)
RIGHT
Turn right (à droite), then left. You are right (tu as raison). You have no right to do this (pas le droit)! Right after the party, he went back home (juste après). This skirt is too right (trop juste). Security has to be very right (bonne). Do you have the right time (l’heure juste)? The right choice (le bon choix).
SHARP
The sharp edge of a stone (bord tranchant). A sharp bend (virage brusque). A sharp business brain (affûté au sens figuré). A sharp sensation (aigu). At ten sharp (exact).
WING
The wing of a bird or a plane (aile). The left wing of a party (aile = sens figuré). The wing of an hospital (pavillon). A new wing in a theatre (coulisses).
HIT
The speedometer hit 200 km/h (a atteint). It hit me very hard (frapper, atteindre = sens figuré). He fell and hit his head on the table (a tapé).
ROOM
There is room for two (de la place). There is still room for improvement (place = sens figuré). There is a (changing) room on the right to try your jeans on (cabine).
TIP
On the tip of my tongue (bout). A useful tip (conseil, truc). I gave him a dollar tip (pourboire).
